European Technology Platforms (ETPs)

  • Provide a framework for stakeholders, led by industry, to define research and development priorities, timeframes and action plans on a number of strategically important issues where achieving Europe's future growth, competitiveness and sustainability objectives is dependent upon major research and technological advances in the medium to long term.
  • Play a key role in ensuring an adequate focus of research funding on areas with a high degree of industrial relevance, by covering the whole economic value chain and by mobilizing public authorities at national and regional levels. In fostering effective public-private partnerships, technology platforms have the potential to contribute significantly to the renewed Lisbon strategy and to the development of a European Research Area of knowledge for growth. As such, they are proving to be powerful actors in the development of European research policy, in particular in orienting the Seventh Research Framework Programme to better meet the needs of industry.
  • Address technological challenges that can potentially contribute to a number of key policy objectives which are essential for Europe's future competitiveness, including the timely development and deployment of new technologies, technology development with a view to sustainable development, new technology-based public goods and services, technological breakthroughs necessary to remain at the leading edge in high technology sectors and the restructuring of traditional industrial sectors.

  • Advanced Engineering Materials and Technologies - EuMaT
  • EuMaT aims to assure optimal involvement of industry and other important stakeholders in the process of establishing of R&D priorities in the area of advanced engineering materials and technologies.

  • Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe - ACARE
  • ACARE's main focus will be to establish and carry forward a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) that will influence all European stakeholders in the planning of research programmes, particularly national and EU programmes, in line with the Vision 2020 and the goals it identifies.

  • Embedded Computing Systems - ARTEMIS
  • ARTEMIS aims to secure employment in Europe and reinforce European industry's leading position in Embedded Systems technology, thereby yielding both direct and indirect benefits to the European citizen.

  • European Construction Technology Platform - ECTP
  • ECTP will raise the sector to a higher worldbeating level of performance and competitiveness. This will be achieved by analysing the major challenges that the sector faces in terms of society, sustainability and technological development.

  • European Nanoelectronics Initiative Advisory Council - ENIAC
  • ENIAC is a large scale, applied-research initiative mobilizing all European efforts in the technology-intensive electronics sector. The main goal is to define the research and innovation priorities to ensure a truly competitive nanoelectronics industry in Europe.

  • European Rail Research Advisory Council - ERRAC
  • ERRAC aims at creating a single European body with both the competence and capability to help revitalize the European rail sector and make it more competitive, by fostering increased innovation and guiding research efforts at European level.

  • European Road Transport Research Advisory Council - ERTRAC
  • ERTRAC aims to mobilize all stakeholders, develop a shared vision, and ensure timely, co-coordinated and efficient application of research resources to meet the continuing challenges of road transport and European competitiveness.

  • European Space Technology Platform - ESTP
  • ESTP aims to create a non-dependent technology portfolio facilitating European strategic independence for the access to and exploration in space, and to support the development of next-generation technologies best serving Europe�s ambitions in space-related sectors (Galileo, GMES, security, space exploration, broadband communications, etc.).

  • European Steel Technology Platform - ESTEP
  • ESTEP brings together the whole European steel industry, research centres, universities, the European Commission and Member States, as well as the other European institutions and trade unions, to give impetus to the full spectrum of European research into materials and processes.

  • European Technology Platform on Smart Systems Integration - EPoSS
  • EPoSS brings together European private and public stakeholders working in the field with the aim of coordinating research into smart systems in relation to automotives, aerospace, telecommunication, medical technologies, logistics, and underlying technologies.

  • Food for Life - Food
  • ETP Food for Life is a platform that aims at quicker and more effective, consumer-oriented food innovation and critical mass through an effective multidisciplinary/integrating approach.

  • Forest based sector Technology Platform - Forestry
  • FTP comprises a competitive, knowledge-based industry that fosters the extended use of renewable resources that strives to ensure its societal contribution in the context of a bio-based, customer-driven and globally competitive European economy.

  • Future Manufacturing Technologies - MANUFUTURE
  • MANUFUTURE aims to develop a "research and innovation" strategy based on a long term vision for a field where there are many technological and economic variables and in consequence to assist the transformation of the European manufacturing industry towards a knowledge-based economy and the achievement of a world leadership in manufacturing.

  • Future Textiles and Clothing - FTC
  • EURATEX's main objective is to create an environment with in the European Union which is conducive to the manufacture of textile and clothing products. EURATEX aims to ensure the smoothest possible transition into the quota-free era, to promote a further expansion of the EU exports of textiles and clothing.

  • Global Animal Health - GAH
  • GAH brings together veterinary pharmaceutical and small biotechnology companies, research institutions, the financial world and the regulatory authorities at the European level to develop and deliver the most up-to-date tools, such as new vaccines or tests to control major animal diseases.

  • Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Platform - HFP
  • HFP aims to facilitate and accelerate the development and deployment of cost-competitive, world class European hydrogen and fuel cell based energy systems and component technologies for applications in transport, stationary and portable power.

  • Industrial Safety ETP - IndustrialSafety
  • IndustrialSafety aims to intensify networking and stimulate technological and organisational improvement in risk management. It will be achieved thanks to a commonly agreed research agenda, but also by working on education, standardisation, transfer to industry and through strong interactions with other Technology Platforms concerned by risk issues.

  • Innovative Medicines for Europe - IME
  • IME's overall goal is to make Europe again the world leader in pharmaceutical research for the benefit of the economy and society by involving the pharmaceutical industry represented by the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) and the European Commission.

  • Integral Satcom Initiative - ISI
  • ISI is an industry-led action forum designed to bring together all aspects related to satellite communications. ISI addresses broadcasting, broadband, and mobile satellite communications, as well as their convergence, in integration within the global telecommunication network infrastructure. ISI supports all forms of space communication and space exploitation.

  • Mobile and Wireless Communications - eMobility
  • eMobility aims to drive future technology development in mobile and wireless communications that serves Europe's citizens and the European economy, and enhance cooperation between industry players, the research community and public authorities.

  • Nanotechnologies for Medical Applications - NanoMedicine
  • NanoMedicine aims to identify the major socio-economic challenges facing Europe, in providing high standards of healthcare across the population, ensuring high quality of life, and focusing on breakthrough therapies, in a cost-effective framework.

  • Networked and Electronic Media - NEM
  • NEM aims to address the convergence of media, communications, consumer electronics, and IT as a wide opportunity for future growth, by taking advantage of generalized broadband access, increased mobility, availability of richer media formats and contents, as well as new home networks and communications platforms.

  • Networked European Software and Services Initiative - NESSI
  • NESSI aims to provide a unified view for European research in Services Architectures and Software Infrastructures that will define technologies, strategies and deployment policies fostering new, open, industrial solutions and societal applications that enhance the safety, security and well-being of citizens.

  • Photonics21 - Photonics
  • Photonics21 unites the majority of the leading Photonics industries and relevant R&D stakeholders along the whole economic value chain throughout Europe and aims at jointly paving the way for Europe's scientific, technological and economic leadership in photonics and, in the long term, making Europe the number one knowledge-based economic area in the world.

  • Photovoltaics - Photovoltaics
  • The Photovoltaic Technology Platform aims at mobilizing all the actors sharing a long-term European vision for photovoltaic; realizing the European Strategic Research Agenda for PV for the next decade(s) and give recommendations for implementation; ensuring that Europe maintains industrial leadership.

  • Plants for the Future - Plants
  • Plants for the Future aims to bring together all relevant stakeholders: researchers, policy-makers, environmental and consumer groups, industry, and farmers. These partners will co-operate in a pragmatic, non-dogmatic manner to reach a consensus on common priorities and draw up action plans to implement them.

  • Robotics - EUROP
  • The ambition of EUROP is to permit Europe to maintain its leading position in robotics and develop new companies and supply networks to meet the new technological needs. It aims to unite all the main industrial and academic robotics stakeholders and public authorities around this common vision.

  • Sustainable Chemistry - SusChem
  • SusChem aims to revitalize chemistry and biotechnology innovation in Europe. It aims to strengthen the sustainability and competitiveness of the European chemical, biotech-based and associated industries, and contributes to meeting the Lisbon objectives for Europe.

  • Water Supply and Sanitation Technology Platform - WSSTP
  • WSSTP aims to contribute towards the competitiveness of the European water industry (Lisbon Strategy), solving the European water problems and reaching the Millennium Development Goals (Johannesburg). It is open to all stakeholders involved in European water supply and sanitation and major end-user groups.

  • Waterborne ETP - Waterborne
  • WATERBORNE TP aims to bundle efforts of the European waterborne actors, to remain champions, in maritime transport, in the production of efficient and safe vessels as well as the related systems and equipment, in providing infrastructure and logistics for ports and waterways, in offshore technology and for leisure craft.

  • Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power Plants - ZEP
  • ZEP aims at identifying and removing the obstacles to the creation of highly efficient power plants with near-zero emissions which will drastically reduce the environmental impact of fossil fuel use, particularly coal. This will include CO2 capture and storage, as well as clean conversion technologies leading to substantial improvements in plant efficiency, reliability and costs.
